11 Days in Jogjakarta: Food Edition

April 09, 2025

For this year's Ramadan, I spent my last days in my hometown and ate tons of delicious food. Alhamdulillaaaah 🤲🏻

I went to Jogjakarta (Jogja for short) back in August 2024 and every time I come back, there's always something new to try, food-wise.

The Rock Burger

It's like Lawless Burger but milder Jogja's version. They put up several rock band posters like Bring Me the Horizon and blasting Linkin Park when I was there (the burger menu is also Linkin Park-coded). Their best-selling menu is actually the Nashville Chicken, but since I wanted to try the burger, I ordered Meteora—their Japanese-inspired burger with chukawakame, katsuobushi, and mentai sauce. The meat itself was... meaty (lol wtf) but I didn't taste the mentai, neither did my sister. The fishy taste was prominent because of the katsuobushi, yet still delicious. One thing I would change is the chip. I think they should serve the bland one, since the burger itself is already salty. And I did try the Nashville Chicken, my sister ordered it to-go for suhoor (pre-dawn meal). I understand why it's the best-selling menu, but it is spicy, so be careful for those who can't handle spicy food.

Couvee

Aside from the matcha, which has since become my favorite from the coffee shop, I ordered the Red Velvet and Gulas Tea. The Red Velvet was so-so. For the Gulas Tea or Tamarind Tea, it was refreshing and tasted like the Gulas candy I often ate when I was little.

💵 Average price: IDR 25.000 - IDR 30.000 / person

📍 Several Locations: Kaliurang, Plaza Ambarrukmo, Taman Siswa

Yamie Panda

This is probably my favorite dish throughout the trip. The noodle is thin so it's easier to eat. I bought the one with complete toppings (I think it was Yamie Manis Special? Sorry, I forgot) ALL of them were delicious. The only downside is that the Jogja City Mall's branch is a bit dirty and dark. Other than that, this place is a must-try for noodle lovers, or not. Just try them, they have multiple branches in Jogja.

Jogokariyan Mosque

I had wanted to go here probably since two or three years ago, and finally got to visit this year. In short, Jogokariyan Mosque provides free meals every day for Iftar (breaking the fast) throughout Ramadan. They prepare at least 3500 portions with a different menu each day. What makes it special is that they use real plates, not plastic or other one-time-use cutlery. The reason? It is more environmentally friendly. I ate Bestik Komplit, which I think is steamed meat accompanied by rice, half an egg, broth, and some vegetables.

Coconut Coffee & Eatery

I have a friend who works in Jogja at the moment and we decided to meet here at Coconut Coffee & Eatery. I ordered Avocado Smoothies Bowl,  Aromatic Tea Java Jasmine, and Potato Mozzarella. The fruits in the smoothies bowl were fresh (avocado, banana, kiwi) added with prune, granola, and almond. Truth be told, it was a bit pricey for me, I think they cater more to international tourists. But the place itself is perfect for a hangout since it's spacious and cozy with beautiful scenery.

Not really a beautiful scenery since it was already dark when I got there 😹

Filosofi Coffee

After iftar, my friend and I walked a little to Filosofi Kopi (Filsof), it's only 20-25 steps from the Coconut Cafe. This place has been around for a while and was packed when the movie (with the same name) came out. Since I can't drink coffee, I ordered Iced Chocolate but my friend told me the coffee was delicious. The chocolate itself was alright, as long as it didn't leave a sandy taste in my throat, all good.

Bolu Pisang Putu Radja

My friend actually told me about this place. I noticed it last year, but it just slipped out of my mind so this was a perfect opportunity to try. The store is located near a housing area, so you have to go through several alleys and rice paddies. But once you arrive, the parking area is spacious so no need to worry if you bring lots of your friends or your extended family. I asked the cashier what the best-selling flavors were and she told me one of them was Pischtacio Kunafa. I ordered one slice with cheese butter. The banana cake (bolu pisang) was already sweet with generous shredded pistachio in the middle and I was glad I chose cheese for the butter instead of chocolate. Other than banana cake, they also serve main courses, but when I was there, they weren't ready yet. It was fine since I only wanted to try the banana cake.

Average price: IDR 25.000 - IDR 30.000 / person (sliced banana cake)
